Dissolution of Ecclesiastical Marriage
"…What God has joined together, let not man separate…Whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery." — Matthew 19:3–9
What Is This Portal?
The Ecclesiastical Council for Family Affairs is the canonical body that examines petitions for the dissolution of Coptic Orthodox marriages. This portal allows you to submit and track your petition securely.
Canonical Reasons
Recognized Reasons for Dissolution
The Coptic Orthodox Church recognizes a limited number of canonical reasons upon which a petition for dissolution may be considered. The Council examines each case individually against these reasons.
Adultery
The primary canonical reason for dissolution, as established in the Holy Scriptures. Evidence must be presented and documented to the Council.
Change of Faith
If one spouse departs from the Coptic Orthodox Church or converts to another faith, this may constitute canonical reasons for dissolution.
Annulment
In rare cases, the Council may declare an annulment — finding that the marriage lacked canonical validity from its inception due to fraud or misrepresentation.
Petition Submission Process
If you have obtained a civil divorce and desire to be remarried within the Church, you must complete and submit a formal petition for canonical review in accordance with diocesan procedures.
